Is there an entrance fee for The Center?  

There is no entrance fee to visit the Center. We ask visitors to make a small $5 contribution when you visit to support our programs.

What is wood turning?

Wood turning is a subtractive process. A piece of wood is attached to a lathe, and sharp tools are used to remove wood from the block to shape an object. The results can range from functional bowls and plates to sculptural shapes.  Sometimes the grain in the wood is the key artistic effect, and other times, the shape becomes the canvas for additional treatments including sanding, burning, painting, etc.  Be careful – wood turning can become an obsession.

Do you produce production turning or wood pieces onsite?

The Center does not offer wood turning services. We can refer you to makers in the Philadelphia region whose expertise is production turning (i.e. architectural elements such as spindles, newl posts, chair legs, etc.).  Please email info@woodturningcenter.org for further information. If you are a local production turner and would like to be added to our list, please send photos of your work and contact information to albert@centerforartinwood.org.

I have wood (or a recent fallen tree to dispose of) to give to artists what can I do with it?

Email a short description of the wood and your timeline for disposal to info@centerforartinwood.org.  We email this information out to local wood turning clubs and artists. They contact owners directly.

How do I become a member?

Do volunteer opportunities exist and, if so, how do I become a volunteer?   

Yes, the center is always looking for volunteers at the Center. We frequently need volunteers for everything from office assistance to helping with a special reception.  If you would like to volunteer, email lori@centerforartinwood.org.  Let us know when you are available (weekly, monthly), and how you’d like to help – office work, greeting visitors, receptions, special events, etc.

How can I be in an exhibition at the Center?

The Center works with an Exhibitions Committee to develop exhibitions at the Center. The Center creates “calls for work” or an independent curator is chosen to select artists for exhibitions.  For “calls for work” members and individuals on our email list will receive information in direct mailings and through email. We will have opportunities posted on our website when available so check back frequently.  To submit a proposal to the Exhibition Committee please review the Exhibition Proposal Guidelines. How do I submit work for consideration in the Museum Store? 

The Center presents museum quality work in its Museum Store. Good photographs and a short artist’s statement are the best way to present your work for consideration. Email resume and 4-6 photos to tina@centerforartinwood.org.
