September 2011–June 2012
Artmobile is a multi-disciplinary collaborative program developed by Bucks County Community College Artmobile and the Center for children in grades K through 12 in the Bucks County School District. Artmobile explores the creative process utilizing wood as the medium. Artmobile classes are presented in the Artmobile which is driven and parked at participating schools. The Artmobile is wheelchair and disability accessible. Artmobile presents wood and wood art objects in a museum-type setting and includes an interactive, hands-on lesson plan. Youth learn about the creative process artisans and craftsmen utilize when creating works from wood including their inspiration, choice of type of woods, scale and design. Artmobile staff work directly with teachers from the school district to integrate the children’s’ current curricula including math, writing, art, music, geography, natural sciences and history into the lesson plans created by Artmobile.
Tree to Form, will explore the use of wood as a medium for creative expression and make important connections to that heritage. It will be curated in conjunction with the Center of Philadelphia and will draw heavily, but not exclusively, on its permanent collection. The exhibition will feature more than 50 objects made by local, regional and international artists. Tree to Form will highlight the nature of wood – the distinctive qualities of different species and where they originate. Woodworking techniques such as turning, carving, burning and painting will be examined for their expressive qualities. There will be a special focus on the artist’s creative process, including drawings and plans as well as an exploration of the dialog between the artist and the unique “living” material he/she works with.
