Hooked on Wood: The Allure of the Fish Decoy – Curated by Dick Walters

(May 18 – July 21, 2012)

This exhibition will showcase modern fish decoys and highlight historical works as early as 1900. The history and craft of fishing lores will be explored with over 100 fish decoys on display: Ice spearing decoys – a handmade utilitarian tool, trophy fish – decorative piscatorial portraits, fishing lures and baits and folk sculpture.  Even though the majority of hooked fishing lures were mass manufactured on the lathe by a number of companies through the century, this exhibition will bring to light the beautiful techniques of artists, craftsman and fishermen who produce these decoys for recreation, sport and to secure food.

Life Aquatic

To complement the Hooked on Wood exhibition, six artists have been invited to produce new work interpreted by, and response to the themes of sea life. Artists include: Michael De Forest, Satoshi Fujinuma, Michael Hosulak, Janel Jacobson, Merryll Saylan, and David Sengel.

Your Personal Hang Ups – Curated by Gail M. Brown

(Nov. 2, 2012 – Feb 16, 2013)

The exhibition Your Personal Hang Ups will include 39 artists who have created inspirational and dynamic furniture. Curator Gail Brown has asked each artist to produce work inspired by the artists personal Hang Ups. Not to be confused with our lifelong neuroses, but more practical such as ones (ideal) hat, coat and/or clothes tree or hanger, wall hooks, free standing pole, rack, stand or wall system. Each Artist responded to the theme with fun and whimsical alternatives into our cultural obsession of containing our material possessions. This is not your typical Ikea shopping trip.

“We all need visual and organizational ‘cues’ in our domestic environment to enhance and support our personal material culture. What would be more enticing to attract those cues than a unique clothes tree/hanger/pole or other functional object…a linear form of unique grace and personality in the recognizable visual vocabulary and particular palette of a singular maker- a master, mid-career or emerging artist- to lure our attention and seduce a hands-on, interactive connection, to non-verbally remind us of our inherently personal relationship with unique, handmade, functional objects.” – Gail Brown, Curator
